The Framework

About CLEAR

CLEAR is a shared architecture for learning. It was developed to answer a simple but important question: how do schools create coherence across classrooms without asking every lesson to look the same?

01

About CLEAR

Schools need coherence. Teachers need autonomy. For too long, these have been treated as competing demands — as though consistency and professional judgement cannot coexist. CLEAR was developed to occupy the middle ground.

CLEAR creates coherence without conformity. It provides a common language for teaching and learning that works across every subject, every year group and every context — whilst preserving subject expertise, professional judgement and teacher autonomy.

When teachers and leaders share a language for learning, professional conversations become more precise, more productive and more focused on what matters. Lesson observations, curriculum planning, professional development and coaching all become more coherent — not because everyone is doing the same thing, but because everyone is working within the same architecture.

"CLEAR creates coherence without conformity."

02

The Philosophy

CLEAR is informed by research and shaped by the realities of classroom practice. It is not a new theory of learning, but a practical framework that translates evidence and professional expertise into everyday teaching.

CLEAR is visible across every lesson — but it does not prescribe what lessons should look like. A science practical, a history enquiry and a PE lesson may all look very different in practice. They should look different. CLEAR provides the shared architecture within which those disciplines can flourish.

The five phases of CLEAR — Connect, Launch, Explore, Assess & Adjust, and Reflect & Reinforce — describe how learning unfolds when it works. They are not a sequence to be performed, but a shared understanding of what learning looks like across every classroom in a school.

The Architect

I am an Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for Teaching and Learning and Professional Development.

CLEAR was developed through years of classroom practice, leadership experience and whole-school implementation. It grew out of a sustained effort to answer a question that many schools are still wrestling with:

How do we create coherence across classrooms without asking every lesson to look the same?

CLEAR is the answer I arrived at — not a finished product, but a framework that continues to evolve through the schools and teachers who use it. It remains grounded in the realities of classroom practice and a belief that coherence and professional autonomy are not opposing forces.

04

A belief in teachers

I believe that teachers are experts.

I believe that schools need shared language and common purpose.

And I believe these things are not in conflict.

CLEAR exists to help schools develop a consistent approach to learning whilst preserving the professional expertise that makes teaching powerful.

CLEAR is bigger than one person. It is a practical, evidence-informed architecture for learning that creates coherence without conformity — and it belongs to every school and teacher that uses it.
